Week 8: "Standing Apart"


MONDAY 9/19

  1. Read the article "The Village Where Men are Banned"
    1. What is the name of the village Jane resides from?
    2. What happened to Jane when her husband found out about the rape?  
    3. How is rape in the US treated in a similar fashion?  Research a recent rape case decided by a male judge.  What was the sentence given to the rapist?  Was it fair?  What connections can you make with our rape culture and that of in Kenya?
    4. What does a typical day of work look like for women like Jane in Kenya?
    5. What is a Kanga?
    6. When was the village founded? By Whom?
    7. Who does the village shelter (types of victims)?
    8. How does the village function and sustain the inhabitants?
    9. What happens under the "tree of speech?"
  2. Complete the Brainstorm Organizer:
    • Writing Prompt: "Outside, women are being ruled by men so they can’t get any change,” says Seita Lengima, an elderly woman. “The women in Umoja have freedom.” Do you agree with Lengima?  Explain the problem these women faced.  Is banning men from this village creating freedoms for these women they otherwise would not have?  Would this solution work in the US?  Why or why not?

    • Check brainstorm to see if they have 1-2 problems they explained these women face. 
    • Is their an explanation of the solution they created to fix their issues.
    • Check to see they have at least ONE specific examples and evidence from article to support each problem and solution paragraph.
  2. Rough Draft:
    • Introduction Paragraph: H.I.T
      • Thesis Starter: "Although women in _________ have faced (problems 1-2), they now (solution) which has (affect of solution on their lives)."
    • Body Paragraphs (2 paragraphs explaining problem 1 , and 2, and a paragraph explaining solution(s).
    • Conclusion: Summarize the main problems and solutions from article
