Lab Agenda:
  1. Complete Vocab List (Monday): "ANATHEMA" & "GAUCHE"
  2. Read the The Root article about The National Anthem and answer questions in your notes section of your notebook:
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. Who wrote the national anthem?
2. What recent events inspired the author to write the song?
3. What war was being fought at the time that the song was written?
4. How does the song writer feel about African Americans which were enslaved at the time?  Provide text evidence from the song or article.
5. Why do you suppose the third verse was removed from the song and hard to find on Google?
6. What new revelation did you learn about The Star-Spangled Banner? Summarize the third verse that was removed from the song.
7. How has reading this article changed your attitudes about our national anthem? Has your opinion about Collin Kaepernick changed? Why or why not? Rewrite your warm-up paragraph arguing in favor or against the quarterbacks decision to sit down and not participate in the anthem now that you learned the history of the song.
8. Watch The 14 minute documentary on the Star-Spangled Banner and complete a t-chart. Label one side of the T-chart "What I knew" and the right side: "What I Learned"

  1. Finish Gilgamesh Presentations.  Students continue adding info to t-chart.
  2. Flood Myth Research: The story of a great flood has been found in the mythology and literature of almost all peoples world-wide, which has convinced many authors that it was a real event. 
    1. Review Project Rubric
    2. You will be in groups reading and gathering info on your regional flood myth in your Rough Draft section of notebook.
    3. Complete a rough draft of project in Rough Draft section.

W-up: Complete vocab list #3 for words "“CASTIGATE” and “IGNOMINY.”

  1. Read the Greek flood myth (Noah vs Greek) and compare it to Noah's Arch flood myth
    1. Complete a Venn Diagram in notes section.
  2. Flood Myth ResearchProject Rubric: The story of a great flood has been found in the mythology and literature of almost all peoples world-wide, which has convinced many authors that it was a real event. Gather info on following:
    1. Basic info about the civilization (ie: religion, population, currency, language, etc)
    2. Setting of flood story
    3. Characters/names in flood story
    4. Complete Plot Diagram (top of shoe box) 
    5. Sketch your 3-D scene you will have inside box

Week 2: Unsung Heroes

MONDAY
  1. Finish the the film "Matrix" and complete the hero's journey organizer
  2. CW/HW: Complete a rough draft for the the writing prompt below
    • Writing Prompt: Do you believe Neo is a hero?  Provide 3 specific stages from the film as support for your claim.  

TUESDAY

  1. Finish the SRI test.  Record your score on your orange sheet.  Bring score to teacher to record into gradebook.  Staple your orange sheet with your lexile score in your "Data Section" on pages 1-3.
  2. Finish rough draft from yesterday (see Monday)
  3. Take notes on common character types (archetypes) in a hero's journey.  Record the character types on page 126-175 of your notes section. Click Link: Character Types (Archetypes)

WEDNESDAY

  1. Introduce the Hall of Heroes mini-project
  2. Read article and discuss the author's definition of a hero .  Do you agree with his definition, why? 
THURSDAY

  1. Warm-up: Read article about Dr. Sebi and write a summary paragraph explaining his contributions to society.  Why would some call Dr. Sebi a hero? Link: Dr. Sebi
  2. Complete your Hall of Hero mini-project
    • Project Guidelines:
      • 1 slide with 5 unsung heroes.  Highlight or bold the name you will answer the questions below.
      • Thesis Statement: ____is an unsung hero because______
      • 1 slide with 4 or more images that represent this persons contribution or admirable qualities
      • 1 slide with facts that represent this persons contribution or admirable qualities
      • 1 slide with biographical info (birthplace, career, family, education)
      • Persuasive paragraph persuading us why he should be recognized as a hero.
FRIDAY

  1. Finish project from yesterday.  6-slide PowerPoint about an unsung hero.
  2. Study for the quiz on 12 stages of hero's journey, and 8 common character archetypes. 
  3. Quiz (15 questions on scantron)
  4. Unsung Hero Hall of Fame: Check out some of the videos of unsung heroes.
