WEEK 13: Research Paper (1984)


MONDAY-TUESDAY
  1. Rough Draft: Complete rough draft of your research paper for 1984.  All 4 sections need to be completed.
  2. Peer-Edit: Grab a purple pen and use the C.U.P.S checklist to guide you in fixing your mistakes.  You must use the symbols below through-out your peers paper and attach the CUPS organizer to their paper to receive a lab grade.
  3. USATESTPREP: Complete practice questions for partial credit.
HW DUE WEDNESDAY 11/1: 
    1.) REWRITE ROUGH DRAFT ON ORGANIZER (ALL 4 SECTIONS).  REWRITE IT USING PENCIL.  MAKE SURE TO INCLUDE THE REVISIONS FROM YOUR PEER-EDIT...24pts!!!!

    WEDNESDAY-THURSDAY
    1. Whole-Group Edit: Bring your paragraphs up to be reviewed and scored
    2. Peer-edit: Complete one final peer-edit with someone new.  Focus this time on RACER and parenthetical citations.
    3. Final Draft: Open Google Docs and begin typing your final version of your paper.  See example below for format/font etc.
    4. Works Cited Page: Go to citation maker online  and plug-in the website of your source to create a works cited entry.  It may require you to scan the website and pull info like the author, title, day of publication and write it in the boxes in order to have a complete works cited entry.

    WEEK 12: Research Paper "1984"

    1. ALL Source Sheets (DUE 10/25): Gather evidence from your first source the online novel 1984 and place on your source sheet.  You will end up with 3 source sheets with info gathered for each of the sections of your paper (see pic below).  Download the source sheet to your lunch number.  Save three source sheets.  Title each source sheet 1, 2, and 3.
    2. Rough Draft (DUE 10/30): Begin writing your research paper once you have gathered all of the quotes, facts, examples you need to complete the 4 sections below (see pic below)

    HW DUE 10/24: 
    1. Source Sheet #2 for the novel 1984 needs to have at least 6 quotes you will use in your paper with full citation.

    THURSDAY

    1. Revisit source #1 and make sure you have all of the quotes/facts (16-20 total) to complete the four sections of your paper.  Use the image below as a guide.  Start by separating your quotes and facts and placing them in the correct section it will go in.
    2. Rough Draft: Begin handwritting your paper in the rough draft section of your notebook IN PENCIL!!!

    HW DUE 10/27: 
    1. Section I (Summary of 1984 w/ 5 events/quotes) due
    2. Entire rough draft due Monday 30th (25 pts)

    FRIDAY
    1. Rough Draft: Complete sections i and ii of your research paper in your rough draft section of your notebook.  Continue with the remaining sections if you have time in class.
    HW DUE 10/30:
    1. Finished Rough Draft (4 sections/minimum 16 quotes/facts)
    2. Friday Practice: Complete 10 practice questions on USATESTPREP for a lab grade.

    1. Complete outline/brainstorm and a thesis for your research topic you selected last class.

    1. Abstract (DUE 10/19): This should be 4 paragraphs long summarizing who you are comparing to Atticus.  Answer these four questions in the form of a paragraph each and  type into Google Docs.  Font=12/Times New Roman:
      1. Summary of your  topic/issue. Include your thesis sentence in this paragraph and underline it.
      2. Explain how your topic connects to the novel 1984
      3. Explain why you selected this topic
      4. What you expect to learn.

    1. Writing Practice:  Read the article about what happens when Black Kennesaw State University cheerleaders recently kneeled during the national anthem.  Read the part the sheriff said. Write a letter to the Cobb County Sheriff explaining your support or condemnation of his words targeting the cheerleaders (8-10 sentences with one fact from the two links below). Use the letter template below to guide your writing.

    2. USATESTPREP: Complete homework practice questions that were due on Claims/Arguments

    1. Claims Practice on USATESTPREP
    2. Prepare to discuss the article about cheerleaders.  How is what the sherif said about the students similar to Big Brother in 1984?  What party and character would the sherif in the article be if he was a  character in Orwell's 1984? Jot down any other similarities you found between the cheerleaders and their action and the consequences thereafter.  Prepare to discuss in class on Tuesday for a grade.

    1. Extra credit: Submit a page explaining how our society resembles Winston's Oceania in 1984

      1. Finish reading chapter 1 of 1984 
      2. Watch documentary CitizenFour and compare Big Brother in the novel 1984 to the Patriot Act signed into law into the US after 9/11 granting the government unlimited access to our online communications.
      3. Writers Workshop: Revise RACER paragraph by adding one fact from the documentary CitizenFour.
